Method
Add sugar and yeast to 1/2 cup water. Let rise in a warm place for 10 minutes. Mix sugar, oil, and salt and a large bowl. Mix well and add vinegar, 3-1/2 cups water, risen yeast, and flour. Mix until dough is moderately stiff and knead on a floured surface until smooth and satiny (8 to 10 minutes.) Add more flour if necessary, so dough won't stick to hands. Shape in ball; place in lightly greased bowl, turning once to grease surface. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled (approximately 2 hours).
Divide dough into two portions. Roll out first portion of dough on a lightly floured surface until 1/2 inch thick. Brush with melted butter, then sprinkle with brown sugar, cinnamon, raisins, and chopped nuts. Roll lengthwise. Seal edge; cut in 1-inch slices. Place on buttered cookie sheet, cut side down. Repeat for the second portion of dough. Cover each pan and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes.
Glaze with a thin frosting and garnish with chopped nuts if desired.
