FSA Pursues Sustainable Seafood for Your Success

FSA has sustainable seafood

Providing quality seafood while ensuring its sustainability is important as this demand increases. We believe the best way to plan for the future of a quality supply is the use and promotion of reputable third-party certification programs.

So what does all of this mean for you? It means we provide you with choices about our sustainable options so you can make a selection that best suits your business.

Planning for the management of our food supply and resources means future generations have access to the ingredients that nourish and delight us: 

• We have been certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) since 2012. All MSC certified items ensure the Chain of Custody standard, which is a standard allowing traceability along the full supply chain from the fishery to the final sale. FSA sources many products from sustainable fisheries certified by the MSC accreditation process, including Coldwater Shrimp, Flatfish, Rockfish, and Dungeness crab from waters off the coast of Oregon and Washington.

• In 2016, we were named 'Ocean Hero' by MSC for our outstanding environmental leadership and support for the MSC and its mission.

• We work closely with the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, which has a certified sustainability program. The importance of managing Alaska’s resources and preserving natural habitats is even expressed in the state’s constitution.

• Our Flying Flag brand of farmed shrimp is Aquaculture Certification Council certified. ACC works to ensure sustainability of farming and processing practices along with the social and welfare needs of their workers.

• Sustainability is also about helping communities. All of our Flying Flag wild Alaskan salmon comes from Aleutian Pribilof Island Community Development Association (APICDA) members and processors. A first nation community development organization, APICDA provides resources to create sustainable communities in the Aleutian and Pribilof Islands. In addition to wild salmon, we source many other fin fish products through Cannon Fish Company, an APICDA company. Watch the video.
