Food Services of America - Portland diverted 86% of its waste at its Universal Food & Product Show in Portland on October 19th, 2011.
Nearly 13 tons of material were diverted, thanks in part to FSA’s education efforts. A wide range of waste is generated at food shows; from food samples, printed materials, plastic utensils and packaging, so FSA put great effort into educating vendors and attendees about donating, composting and recycling.
FSA Portland has used eco-friendly utensils and plates, and reusable cloth food show bags at all its shows for several years now as part of its SNOR eco-friendly program. Now, the “Waste Zero” goal has taken FSA to a new level!
“FSA’s Sustainable, Natural, Organic and Regional (SNOR) program supports our commitment and demonstrates our walking the talk,” says Pamela Lewis, Marketing Manager. She adds, “FSA is recognized as being the industry leader in the eco-friendly movements. The decision to take on another 'Waste Zero' food and product show was not a hard thing to do – it was the right thing to do. We are proud of our progress and we know our results will improve with each endeavor.”
As an industry leader, FSA Portland was the first broadline distributor in the nation to be certified for by the Food Alliance for sustainable business practices. The Food Alliance is a nonprofit organization that certifies farms, ranches, processors, and distributors for sustainable agricultural and business practices.
FSA Portland worked with the material recovery contractor, Recology, to achieve a diversion rate of 86%, a commendable success for the environment.
