Produce: Go Seasonal & Local

Five Great Reasons to Go Seasonal and Local with Fresh Produce

Chefs and health experts alike will tell you to eat seasonal or include foods in your diet that are grown at the same time that you are buying.

1. More Flavorful

When fully ripened produce is picked from the vine or tree, it is full of natural flavor, is sweeter, and tastes better. The flavor is better retained when the produce is picked at its optimal time (ripeness) and spends the least amount of time in transit or storage.

2. More Nutritious

Having time to mature and develop in the natural growing process leads to a harvest that is more nutritionally dense. According to the Cleveland Clinic, for example, eating spinach in season provides up to three times more vitamin C. Produce stored for long periods of time have a reduction in phyto-nutrient content.

3. Supports Local Farmers

Aside from the flavor and nutritional value, buying and eating local helps to support your local community. Knowing where your food is coming from, who is growing it and the processes that they use helps you feel more connected to the whole process.

4. Supports Your Body’s Needs

Summer foods such as berries and stone fruits supply our bodies with extra beta-carotene and other carotenoids that protect us from the sun. They also supply us with energy for activities usually reserved for the summer months.

5. Environmentally Friendly

Seasonal produce can often times grow without too much human assistance, ie. pesticides or genetic modifications.
It also means locally grown, therefore less transportation (gasoline consumption and “food mileage”), less refrigeration, less storage, and less irradiation of produce. The amount of wasted crop is also substantially lower.

There are tremendous advantages to using the local resources that we have available and to keeping your menu items fresh and flavorful.
